MODES OF MODULATION

NURIA BOWART + BELINDA HE | APRIL 11 - 14

MODES OF MODULATION event tile

In order to manage a fall we must be able to feel where we are in space, and what direction we wish to go.  Each choice relies on the understanding of options, and the capacity to manage them. Within the content of the Axis Syllabus we can learn material that helps us to ready ourselves for various options of movement for dancing.

Using tools from the Feldenkrais Method, we harness the capacity of our nervous systems to adapt to situational necessities, allowing for sensitivity to be foregrounded in this playground for emergent adventures in movement. Beginning slowly and gently, we invite states of readiness for introspection, nuanced attention, and spontaneity, fostering the conditions for expansive alertness so that we may approach dancing decisively and precisely.

The Axis Syllabus is a compilation of information regarding human movement from various fields such as anatomy, biomechanics, anthropology and physics. The goal is to find ways of moving that follow the path of least resistance, minimizing excess tension in the body, and thereby decreasing injury potential.

The Feldenkrais Method is a somatic, or body-oriented, intervention designed to help people reconnect with their bodies and learn ways to move with greater efficiency. Through the incorporation of subtle movements and focused attention, this method strives to improve overall human functioning by using the brain’s neuroplasticity, or ability to adapt to sensory input.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

NURIA BOWART

“Looking into the body I find myself repeating the words of Jaap van der Wal: “The body is a living performance in time.”

The deeper I go with my studies the more I can perceive the multidimensional fabric that is the body.

A fertilized seed unfurling. We become.

A series of sacs tethered to trunks that move in the wind, carrying their water, rooted to the center and the sky, and subjected to the forces of the physical universe of which we are a part.

A bloom of possibilities with prerecorded intentions and limitations.

The body needs metaphors of ecology not technology to define it. We are organisms, multiple environments interacting.

We are the fractal expression of the larger ecosystem of which we are a part. It is evident that we are made up of relationships in movement.

Movement is the mechanism through which we become. It is the way that we inhabit space and time. It is our story, and our message.

Creation funnels through the process of thought, word and deed. And, movement is necessary for each of those phases to exist.

Movement is the trajectory of energy.

Form is the consequence of movement, and the servant to it".

BELINDA HE is a Singapore born, San Francisco based dance artist, movement educator and Feldenkrais Practitioner who received her MFA in Dance from Sarah Lawrence College in New York. She incorporates her studies of the Feldenkrais Method and aspects of functional anatomy and biomechanics into an ever-evolving personal practice in order to synthesize her physical, intellectual and creative energies. She is dedicated to asking “What is precision?” and questions its relevance to all aspects of her life. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2017, Belinda maintains a private Feldenkrais practice in San Francisco, specializing in working with and coaching professional dancers who are recovering from injury, or desiring to improve their performance. As a performer, she current works closely with Hope Mohr, and also maintains a collaborative creative practice with Karla Quintero in addition to her collaborations with Mohammadreza Akrami.
